Therapies › Allergy Testing and Treatment

Other therapies

Allergies typically stem from a hyperactive immune system. Our immune system is mistakenly identifying foods and environmental proteins as foreign invaders such as bacteria, fungus and viruses. Allergies must first be identified by a blood allergy test.

Food Antibody Profiles

The incidence of food allergies has increased dramatically over the years, and it is estimated that up to 20% of the population have adverse reactions to foods. The Great Smokies Diagnostic Lab IgG Food Profile helps identify those with true immune-mediated allergies versus food intolerance. It measures IgG antibody levels to 88 foods and Total IgE. The IgE Food Profile measures quantitative IgE antibody levels to the most common types of dietary allergens. Additional tests are also available for Vegetables and Spices.

The Consequences of Food Allergies

Increased total antigenic load related to food and environmental sensitivities has been associated with a wide range of medical conditions affecting virtually every part of the body. Even mood and behavior, including hyperactivity disorders in children, are profoundly influenced by food allergies. Symptoms can range from mildly uncomfortable to severe and may include:

  • Asthma
  • Migraine
  • Eczema
  • Urticaria
  • Arthritis
  • Ear infections
  • Sinusitis
  • Colitis

IgE vs. IgG Mediated Allergens

Classical skin testing for allergies such as skin-scratch testing, only measures IgE-mediated reactions and provides no information concerning delayed IgG hypersensitivity reactions. Assessment of relative IgG antibody levels to a multitude of foods using sensitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) technology identifies those foods against which the patient is producing antibodies. Measuring both relative IgE and IgG antibody levels provides an invaluable starting point for dietary intervention. The key differences between IgE and IgG mediated allergies are summarized below:

IgE Mediated Allergies
Immediate onset (within minutes)
Circulating half life of 1-2 days
Permanent allergies
Stimulates histamine release
Includes foods, inhalants & molds
IgG Mediated Allergies
Delayed onset (4-72 hours)
Circulating half life of 21 days
Temporary allergies
Stimulates histamine release
Includes foods, herbs & spices

LDA / LDI therapy

Allergies are treated using a technique known as LDA or LDI therapy. This therapy involves an injection of a very low dose of an allergen combined with an enzyme known as beta glucuronidase. This injection helps retrain the immune system to develop tolerance to the injected antigen. This injection is given every 7-8 weeks and most patients will experience an improvement in their allergy symptoms after a few treatments. This treatment has been proven to be very effective for eczema, seasonal allergies, food ellergies and chemical allergies.

Contact Dermatitis and Patch Testing

A patch test is given to those patients who want to know what chemicals are aggravating or causing eczema.

It consists of 24 of the most common allergens; nickel sulphate, wool alcohols, neomycin sulfate, potassium dichromate, caine mix, fragrance mix, colophony, epoxy resin, quinoline mix, balsam of Peru, ethylenediamine dihydrochloride, cobalt chloride, p-tert-butylphenol formaldehyde resin, paraben mix, carba mix, black rubber mix, Cl+Me-isothiazolinone (Kathon CG), quaternium-15, mercapto benzothiazole, p-phenylenediamine, formaldehyde, mercapto mix, thiomersal and thiuram mix.

The test consists of 2 pieces of surgical tape with 24 polyester patches which are coated with a film containing a specific allergen or allergen mix.

Treating Allergies

At our clinic we treat allergies by identifying and removing the allergen from a patient's diet and then modulating the immune system to reduce the immune response to the allergen. At out clinic this is achieved by utilizing ozone therapy and various supplementation.

Heavy metal testing

Heavy metals are found in each and everyone of us. It is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant. Many of us also have mercury fillings in our mouths. Heavy metals are a powerful burden to our bodies. Heavy metals have been linked to autism, heart disease, Alzheimer, cancers and more.

Colds and flu

Acute infections can be quite debilitating especially to an immunocompromised or elderly individual. Photoluminescence and Hydrogen peroxide therapy can be used to help fight the infection. Treatments are typically performed everyday for up to 3 days. Patients will notice a reduction in symptoms in 2 days. These treatments work by stimulating the immune system and killing the infection directly.
