Osteoarthritis (OA) is a fancy name for wear and tear in a joint. As we all age, our joint wears down and we start to feel pain, stiffness and “clicking” in our joints. In our aging population, this condition is becoming more and more widespread. There are several options to treat this. Losing weight is one important step in reducing the wear and tear. For every extra pound you carry, this exerts about 5 times more force in your knee. So if you can lose even 5lbs of weight, that’s about 25lbs of force less on your knees. Exercise can also help maintain the integrity of the joint as the saying goes, “if you don’t use it you’ll lose it”. Medical treatments include an injection of a gel into the knee to help lubricate the joint. This is called viscosupplementation and the brand I prefer is called Durolane. However, my most popular treatment is prolotherapy or prp injections for the knee. These treatments help rebuild the knee and reduce pain. This prolotherapy treatment is performed every month for 2-4 sessions.
